How to split a PDF into separate files

Updated October 7, 2026 · Get PDF Online

A long PDF is not always what you need. You may want only the invoice from a 40-page statement, one chapter of a book, or the signature page of a contract.

Splitting lets you pull out exactly the pages you need and leave the rest behind.

Split a PDF step by step

  1. Open the Split PDF tool.
  2. Add the PDF you want to split.
  3. Choose the page range you need, for example pages 3-7, or split the file into several parts.
  4. Download the new PDF files.

The work is done in your browser, so confidential documents stay on your device.

When splitting helps

  • Sending only the relevant pages to someone.
  • Breaking a big file into parts that fit an email attachment limit.
  • Separating a scanned batch into one file per document.
  • Pulling a single page out to sign or print.

Split or remove pages: which one?

If you want to keep a small part of a document, split it. If you want to keep almost everything and drop a few pages, the Remove pages tool is quicker.

Fix the page orientation first

Scanned pages sometimes come out sideways. Use Rotate PDF before splitting so every new file opens the right way up.
